Remember: If you are using UTF-8 a "duplicate char (as in byte)" could (not 
sure if that happens) be a correct rune (codepoint) for a otherwise normal char 
(as in visible character). So I think to be on the safe side you may ultimatly 
use unicode for your stuff. Which would even end up as a very useful collection 
of functions to share with the public :)
