another way I overlooked is some macro that converts Nim sets to C using if 
stmts, for example
    
    
    var flip: set[RendererFlip]
    var result: cint = 0
    if FlipHorizontal in flip:
      result = result or 1
    if FlipVertical in flip:
      result = result or 2
