Thanks to those people who wrote me privately when I asked for help about why footnotes inserted in the middle of a line were creating an unusually large space between that line and the next. We finally figured it out: for some reason not yet clear, Nisus was adding an "additional whitespace character after each footnote reference. I do not know how it could wind up in your documents, since it is an odd character to be sure. Specifically it's the unicode "file break" character. All versions of Express that I tried (2.0.1, 2.1.3, 2.5b5) interpret your file the same way, so I'm not sure how previous versions would have displayed your file differently. In any case, you can copy the character to the Find & Replace panel and replace all occurrences with an empty string. After that your document lays out properly."
This from Martin Wierschin. His solution works, I'm happy to say.
