Funk up your winter wardrobe with a pair of functional boots

A few days ago the mercury plunged to an all-time low since the ’50s in
Mumbai, and it prompted designer Narendra Kumar Ahmed to jest that next
year he will put out a special winter line. Mumbai is a single-season
city, but last week has taught us that it always helps to be prepared
than to be sorry. For you may be left with the sole choice of hastily
hauling in stuff from the migrant Tibetan woollen sellers.

For women

A sweater dress with leggings is the way to up winter temperatures!

Layer up; the other option of course is to look like a starlet
shivering in spaghetti straps. It's clearly not an option for you,
right? Makes sense to stock up on a couple of pashminas; they are light
and easy to carry off, and lend a casual elegance when teamed with any
outfit. (And they help hide the bulge!) Take your pick from fuchsia,
burnt oranges and hot pinks.

Designer
Krishna Mehta suggests using an "embroidered pashmina in Indian colours
such as beige, off-white and mustard as it enhances the beauty of a
sari or a salwar kameez".

Narendra Kumar Ahmed's preference, on
the other hand, hinges on western chic. Says he, "A jacket can at once
be sporty and elegant. You can wear it over a pair of jeans or throw it
over a dress and you're ready to go." However, he cautions that the
jacket must be well cut.

Designer Anita Dongre suggests wearing
a winter coat or jacket that sits just below the waist or even a long
winter coat that ends short of the knees, in solid colours such as grey
or black.

Krishna Mehta's preference of colours is reds and
navy. "Wear a single colour as it offers symmetry and makes even a
slightly over-sized person look small," she says.

Go ahead and sport that jacket, but make sure it’s well cut

Mehta also roots for the sweater dress, "which can be teamed with a
turtle neck under the dress or a wide waist belt with leggings,
depending on the severity of the weather".

While
Mehta opts for long skirts with leggings or narrow trousers in solid
colours such as black and charcoal grey, Designer Nandita Mahtani opts
for short skirts with leggings or simply a pair of well-cut trousers.

Team
the outfit with a snazzy pair of boots to ooze oodles of attitude. You
only get a couple of months in a year to sport boots, so don’t miss the
opportunity! A pair with an average sized heel can be both fun and
functional.

For men

Men need to sober up this winter with blacks and greys ruling their
palette

They have a limited choice, but all's not lost. Narendra Kumar Ahmed
advises a couple of classic jackets in the closet for men: a branded
sports jacket for the day and a velvet jacket by night. Mahtani
suggests slipping on a jumper with a zipper or a simple V-neck sweater,
while Krishna Mehta wishes that the Indian male would experiment with
scarves and stoles worn under jackets. The colour palette for men stays
sober with classic black and charcoal grey remaining dominant.

 Keep your knits cosy

• To wash stains off your woollens, rinse them off immediately with cold water

• To ensure that your knits stay in shape, don't hang them, instead fold them
when you put them away for long periods of time

• Check
the label - depending on the type of wool, the washing instructions
will vary. Some need to be hand-washed, others need to be dry-cleaned
and still others can be put straight into the machine on a special wool
cycle

• Always dry your woollens away from direct sunlight
