What is the relevance of period costumes to everyday wear?
It's
all about infusing inspiration from the past into contemporary fashion.
For example, if you go a little light on the jewellery, you can easily
wear a Jodha Akbar lehnga-choli to a wedding. If you are creative, you
can also team an ornate choli with a plain chiffon sari to an evening
dinner.
If one has no wedding coming up in the family, why would one want to pick up
one of your Jodhaa Akbar outfits?
This
is a diffusion line that I am showcasing. The collection has been
inspired by the film. So you have tunics that feature colours and
motifs from the era, which can easily be worn with pants to a
semi-formal occasion or even to an afternoon lunch. This particular
line features a toned down version of my designs in the film.
How close are your period costumes to history?
There
is very little improvisation in terms of colour, embroidery and
silhouettes. But I get enough room to play around with other design
details like embellishments etc., of course in keeping with the era
under consideration.
What inspires you so to specialise in period clothing?
The
options in this area of work are fantastic. It is also very challenging
and creative. I do a lot of research before starting work on such a
project. Also, it is a fantastic way to get to know our culture better
and to educate people about it. We in India often don't know much about our own
history and culture these days.
