Farukh
Sayad is a normal peddler of trinkets in Mumbai’s crowded locals.
There’s nothing unusual about that; many others who do the same thing.
There is only one difference. Farukh has no arms. But his disability
has not deterred him. Instead it has spurred him to do things that you
would not imagine someone with that kind of disability to do – he can
ride a kinetic, play carrom, cricket and badminton, and also swim!

love him because he brings Colaba Causeway inside the local trains!
Chokers, bracelets, chains, ear-rings, rings – Farukh is every junk
jewellery lover’s paradise. And his buyers vouch for the quality and
fashion quotient of his collection. “I don’t need to go to Colaba
Causeway or Linking Road. He brings them to me!” exclaims a delighted
passenger, Erika Pinto.
When
Farukh was ten, he lost both his hands in an accident. “I went to the
second standard then, and had to leave school. I did a number of odd
jobs and ultimately started this jewelry selling business in trains.”
And there was no looking back ever since.
Now
at 33, he is well established in the business and earns Rs 500 a day
which, he claims, “is necessary to survive well in Mumbai”. “I buy my
merchandise from traders coming from various parts of Mumbai as well as
different parts of india,” reveals Farukh.
On
the personal front, life has treated him well. He is happily married
and lives with his wife and kids in Bandra. He enjoys his life to the
fullest and has never let his disability come in the way of his
happiness. And any plans for the future? Well, he plans to set up his
own shop someday.
