Like any household run on a strict diet of DYI and discipline nearly three decades back, one of the things that was rationed in our household was the free flow of soft drinks. Come to think of it, it was a curious thing since there was no embargo on booze. A bottle could be opened up without any preamble, to enhance an after-dinner lassitude or more appropriately at a house party.
It was in the course of one of those house parties that we – a motley gaggle of adolescents high on a certain notion of adulthood – decided to quietly bring in our own version of coming of age. We would get armloads of bottles of coke, quietly chilling in a bath of ice, sneak into the scene of the party to steal tequila glasses and prepare to get trashed. The glasses would be lined up on the floor, the elixir poured and ten of us would toss it bottoms-up, squeeze our eyes shut, throw our heads around, shake a little, pretend to look wasted a la Zeenat Aman and her trashed friends in Hare Rama Hare Krishna and jump up and down in a mad frenzy with pig tails and nerdy glasses flopping around our faces. So this is what being adult felt like. Swell. Minus the lemon and salt, mind you. More drinks would be poured, more glasses broken and more ribbons would go up in the air; and by the end of it all, we would be a bunch of shrieking kids flopped in a large heap on the floor pulling and tugging at each other because that's what we thought happy adults did in films (damn those single malted sober ones next door; we could show them a thing or two). After all, what could a bunch of over-energised eight-year-olds do when quarantined from adult company. It became a ritual of sorts. We even carried extra tequila glasses from our homes, lest we fell short. We perfected the art at home. On perfectly quiet and sober afternoons my brother (all of three) and I would request a soft drink. Mom would acquiesce, put out the requisite glasses on the dining table with a silent smile, seat herself at the table and watch her kids go. We had established our own funk.
