Synthetic molecules to battle cancer Researchersare looking at synthetic molecules to provide a vastly cheaperalternative to therapeutic antibodies in the treatment of cancer andother diseases. Researchers of University of Texas Southwestern havedeveloped a simple and inexpensive method to screen small syntheticmolecules and isolate a handful that might treat cancer and otherdiseases. These findings will be appearing in the forthcoming issue ofthe Journal of the American Chemical Society. It has several advantagesover traditional tools that isolate such compounds from largecollections, costing only $1,000, as against the $40,000 fortraditional methods.
The researchers screened more than 300,000such molecules, called peptoids in just a couple of days, with the helpof the new technique. They promptly singled out five promisingcandidates mimicking an antibody used for treating cancer. One of thecompounds blocked the growth of human tumours in a mouse model.
