patching sources
+ configuring
+ building
+ installing
+ post-installation fixup

Couldn't we scan for specific lines, make them even more specific by
prepending "phase: " or "PHASE: " and fold everything in between?

Why do we need a patch to 'gnu make' to achieve folding?
