Weird - what branch are you on? Anything special in you configuration.nix? Sounds like a bug somewhere but could be anything. I have no idea what causes that "connection timed out" for the session creation if it's not DNS.
You could try picking a different nixpkgs commit and see if your system is stable there. Wout.
