I think it's used by this tooling here: https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/blob/master/pkgs/build-support/upstream-updater/update-walker.sh#L100 It might also be related to the updateWalker meta attribute mentioned here: http://nixos.org/nixpkgs/manual/#sec-standard-meta-attributes
