A simple "nixos-rebuild switch --rollback" took the machine back to 16.03.836.aff03ae. Afterwards, a "nixos-rebuild switch --upgrade" brought it to 16.03.909.f199be0. Machine is working now. Thanks to all the nix devs who made rollback functionality work so well.
