Hi Tim, it looks like you may be interested in https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/blob/master/pkgs/build-support/upstream-updater/update-walker.txt, which appears to do something similar to your project from the quick glance that I gave it. I believe that update-walker is also what https://github.com/Phreedom/nixpkgs-monitor (used to be available on http://monitor.nixos.org/) uses, so I think it would be nice if we could just document this existing system better.
