The ones from Comcast are hard to beat when it comes to needing to record a show on any channel. That is true for whatever satellite provider you want to use as well. Either option is still technically a subscription. They also eliminate the option to send your recording to DVD or VCD. Tivo will let you have a few more options, but then that is a bill for the service from them, purchase of hardware and then possibly renting a cablecard to get the channels you want. Problem I have with the Myth setups right now is that you have a couple of options to screen scrape the guide data or you have to subscribe to a service to get guide data. So again with the subscription. Also your options for the premium content have gone away in any digital format. I have really kind of given up on the idea of using any DVR that can't take a cablecard. I think maybe we need to petition the FCC on getting open access to the cablecard readers such that we could get myth back into the mix. Right now my current preferred option isn't so open source though. I picked up a copy of playon from MediaMall and let it convert Hulu and Netflix to a uPnP stream. That lets me use my PS3 to watch Hulu on my TV as well as the netflix instant movies without the need to hook up a computer or sit in my less relaxing chairs. Also, with access to the uPnP fuse driver, I can sit on my linux box and cp movies from Netflix to the harddrive for later viewing. So far I have only done that on Netflix for a couple of movies my GF wanted to see but had an expiration date. So we copied them for later viewing. We have copied a couple of TV episodes from Hulu to loan to a friend to watch without net access. I'm thinking that once IPTV becomes a bigger thing, Myth might get a good comeback as long as they don't screw up and use some form of encryption to stop access to those streams we have authenticated for and requested.
