Wasn't 1200 Baud where we first had error correction?  I still
remember dialing in at 300 Baud and having to deal with bad
characters.  I even remember dropping to 110 to get a more reliable
connection.  At the time, we had to use Kermit for file transfer
because it had built-in error correction.
