Paul, Try to telnet to the SQL server from windows and the linux box.
telnet myserver.vanderbilt.edu 1433 Make sure you get a connection from both and be sure the response is the same. What you are describing almost seems like it is a blocked port. If that works then I am at a loss. Do you have any prebuilt (i.e. known good) tools on Linux that will use ODBC to connect to the DB? Do you have another ODBC source you could try connecting to?
