Greetings,

Hopefully the following will be coherent enough to start a discussion.

I have noticed since 2003 (XFree86 -> Xorg - big news at the time),
but really since 2006 that there have been some rather significant
changes in Linux (generally ubuntu) distros.
For one, upstart replaced SysV in 2006. Also that Hal has been
deprecated to DeviceKit.
What other changes like this have there been?
udev appears safe for now, as does grub.

It's been big news that ubuntu in 11.04 will drop Xorg in favor of Wayland.

It looks like PackageKit is yet another / relatively new attempt at
solving the software package problem at least on the front end.
I'm not sure what PolicyKit replaces (if anything), but seems to be a
new aim at not using sudo for gui based programs.

BTW, is Xen still being considered depreciated to KVM?

What other big changes have there been (aside from the completely fair
scheduler; which isn't very fair at all)?
Respectfully,
Andrew
