That said, aside from being most likely cheaper, how would you think VPS 
virtualization compares to hosted VMware ESX linux guests?  Can you tell a 
difference, and, if so, where is one likely to see an advantage of one over the 
other in practice?  I know a little about the core differences (VMWare true CPU 
emulation versus VPS' "partitioning" (right?), but how does that translate to 
the real world of needing a "dedicated", hosted linux environment (one versus 
the other)?

I don't have any personal experience with linode but several friends swear by
