I can attest that one can find good jobs in the Nashville area without
a certification but if you have little real world experience to put on
your resume then a Red Hat certification seems to be the most popular
thing mentioned in job postings that I see frequently.  Likely the
best way to get a door open for a first job.

The LPIC or Linux++ are out there as well and there is nothing wrong
with those, but in resume-land Red Hat certified is the buzzword among
hiring managers and head hunters who don't know the details.  One
could probably figure out an honest way to infer that they have a Red
Hat equivalent certification with their Linux++ or LPIC.

A college degree in this arena is also important but I know several
well paid admins who have no 4 year degree... but it really wouldn't
hurt if you are inclined, have the time and do it without going
$20,000 in debt.
