I'm kind of in the same boat, Michael, with the exception that I have an AAS in programming, but have had to do very little programming in my career. As a result, I've lost most of my knowledge of .Net (thankfully), Java and JavaScript. I've had to do a minute amount of PHP, JavaScript, HTML/CSS in the last couple of years playing with WordPress & Drupal, but not enough that I could go and write anything useful. I'm in my 40s and am seeing my utility as a geek slipping away, so I'm going through the Codeacademy programs to refresh & rebuild myself. I can manage an IT department, but I'm not confident I could program my way out of a wet paper bag without Google's help :-)

Good luck -- I thing Codeacademy is a great place to start.

I have been interested in learning to program for some time now. Though I feel I am a little late starting since I'm in my mid thirties. We should always keep learning right?

I have watched several screen casts, looked for books in the local book shops and online. And I just recently found out about the free codecademy. They offer many things web development, python, Ruby, and JavaScript.

Honestly I don't have a specific goal, and I do already work in a totally unrelated field. But my interest has been in this area for years. And I want to try this. I am also aware that I won't be a programmer after I finish a lesson plan on codcademy. But it is s structured lesson plan to get me going with out enrolling in school.

Where would you advise someone like me, no experience at all to start? Web development and move into Python or Ruby? Or straight into a programming language?

What do you guys / gals think?

Michael
