Suggestion from nonexpert NLUG attendee (me): searching startpage.com for "Linux Mint download" showed this link- http://linux.softpedia.com/get/System/Operating-Systems/Linux-Distributions/Linux-Mint-17252.shtml - download and burn live 64bit ISO to a DVD and test used laptops to see if it will boot from Linux DVD. If it boots and the price is right, you have a winner.
