Yes, that's what I want to do, Howard.

I can monitor the traffic if it hits my NIC but right now my entire network
is switched so no traffic goes to the machine I would monitor from.

When I wrote the message I didn't think I had any Ethernet HUBS (as opposed
to switches) still lying around but I've just come from digging through
some dusty old storage boxes and I came up with a couple 10Mb switches.
Unfortunately they were somehow separated from their wall warts so I still
have to dig up a couple of those.

Question: I know I said I could use a 10Mb switch but it occurs to me that
everything in my network is currently 100/1000 Base T. Will devices that
claim 100/1000 Base T compatibility talk to 10Mb devices? If not, I would
have to come up with a real Rube Goldberg setup to make it all work (I do
have at least one old 10/100 switch but I would need two and the setup
would get crazy).

Finally, I know an option would be to throw a second NIC in the monitoring
machine and use it as a gateway so it could monitor the traffic. That
seemed like a lot of work before but right now it seems pretty attractive!
