Update: For now, my son is using his older Windows laptop.

I recently backed up my / partition, and updated the display drivers to an
appropriate Nvidia package. Fingers crossed, things appear to be working
better than with the generic driver.

I have been able to run Steam Beta, and can now run the Windows games I
bought many years back under Linux!
