But that is not what the initial criticism was about, unless I veered
off course as I have been not following this thread in depth.  The basic
idea of adding color as being "silly" is a wrong, IMO.

Now, what you ask is valid, but that is based on a cost-benefit analysis.
Adding color has benefits, but it may not be worth the maintenance
costs.

It would be nice if the format syntax could support non-ASCII character
sequences without munging them since I think this will be useful beyond
including ANSI escape sequences.  If the whole color push motivates
some to to make it happen, more power to them.
