Though it looks like mhstore causes the problem?  I don't
understand why -file wouldn't solve it.

I don't see why that would be necessary.

Another issue, this for loop won't work on filenames that
contain spaces, etc.:

    for PART in `mhstore $MSG 2>&1 | awk \
      'match($0,/as file .+/){print substr($0,RSTART+8,RLENGTH)}'`; do
