Yes, I probably just screwed up when I tried.
20 lines of C-code wasn't hard to cook up :-)

Two. distro, and git.
Emacs/mh-e is involved only because it seemed that I couldn't reproduce the
problem from cmd-line only tools.  In the end, I found input that reproduced
without me going through mh-e each time.  So I dropped mh-e from the CC :-)

I suspect that making the header/body separator long/shorter would alter the
number of NULs.  I haven't tried that yet.
