[VIDEO EXTRA!] Rube Goldberg on Film!
The name Rube Goldberg has long been synonymous with wacky, complex
sequence machines to do simple tasks. His fame as a cartoonist has
lastest over a century (in 1915, he was earning a salary of $50K/yr,
equivalent to over $1.2 million today). Vast numbers of contests occur
every year even now celebrating the design of ever more complicated
"Rube Goldberg Machines" -- and an amazing new VR app for the Oculus
Quest permits the creation of such wonders completely in a virtual
environment, all with the appropriate physics ("Gadgeteer"). Exhibits
around the world celebrate his work and modern related efforts (see:
https://www.rubegoldberg.com ).
Did you know that those cartoons originally were part of a parody of a
couple of University of California professors that he had found
boring, and that the fictional creator of the machines was Professor
Lucifer Gorgonzola Butts?
Anyway, have you ever seen what Rube looks like? Heard his voice? Watched
him draw? Probably not. Let's fix that.
Yesterday I stumbed across a 1940 auto industry film that features Rube
himself, at his drawing board. It's quite the gem.
And you don't need a complicated machine to watch it. Well, it's complicated
at the other end, but at this end, you just have to click here:
