each form of communication has it's own advantages and disadvantages. for example, mailing lists are great for espousing all your opinions, whether or not anyone wants to listen.
chat has way more _body language_, you can tell how much attention someone is giving you and a lot of stuff like that. email is probably better for a discussion, as everyone has time to think about what they want to say. on the other hand, irc is better for getting to know each other. In the long run, I think that is more important.
