To be truly compliant with the IETF specs, you cannot just use 128 random bits because 6 bits are imposed in version 4 UUIDs:
Version 4 UUIDs have the form xxxxxxxx-xxxx-4xxx-yxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx where xis any hexadecimal digit and y is one of 8, 9, A, or B. (from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universally_unique_identifier#Version_4_.28random.29) Setting these 6 bits incorrectly (randomly) will likely be harmless most of the time but it takes a bit more work to generate truly compliant UUIDs.
