/usr/local is a fine location for packages that are installed
system-wide but not under control of the system's package management
system (like apt or yum).

The man pages go into /usr/local/share/man/man1. That's normally on
the search path but if not, just point your MANPATH to it.

Updates are easy: simply untar the new version over the old one.
