Had similar requirements when building acceptance tests with zombie.js, now
our tests looks like that:

  it "should display things", async ->
    # Using post requests to populate things via REST API.
    @browser.post '/things', name: 'Thing A'
    @browser.post '/things', name: 'Thing B'

    @browser.navigate '/things'

    # Checking for things.
    expect(@browser).to.have.text /Thing A.*Thing B/

Note the little `async` term in spec declaration, more details

Also, You may take a look at tests for mongo-lite
https://github.com/alexeypetrushin/mongo-lite/tree/master/test (it uses old
format `it.sync`, but still can be used as an example)

Use power of dark side to eliminate fat code :)
