I appreciate your suggestions, but I am aware of all the alternatives.
Eventually I hope to re-write to use the libuv method that core uses for 
maximum efficiency, but for now I'd just like to get what I've got building.

As well as being the only module offering a native bzlib binding, this is 
also a learning experience in writing modern Node bindings.
This also gives a non-Stream interface to zlib, which it is conceivable 
people might want instead of the core offering.
I think that's plenty of justification for me trying to maintain it :)
