In addition to the other reasons mentioned, it has been my experience that when 
a new version of node is released, especially a new major version, strange 
errors can occur unless I trash the node_modules folder and reinstall all the 
modules with that version of node. Using a package.json makes that as easy as 
"rm -rf node_modules && npm install".
