I highly recommend Carla. It can load ladspa, lv2, dssi, linux vst, Windows vst, soundfont, sfz, and maybe more... The GUI resembles a "rack" instead of a mixer, which has its disadvantages. I try to use non-mixer for most things and just use Carla for a few "special" fx -- similar to a real rack. See http://kxstudio.sourceforge.net/Applications:Carla.
My dream plugin host would be some combination of non-mixer and Carla. Any chance the two projects could work together? The non-mixer interface + the Carla engine (with support for lv2, vst, sfz, etc.) would be heaven...
