The auto input rule means "connect any matching output to my inputs". Therefore, in this scenario, if you set the rule on the master strip to "*/mains", then the main outputs of every other strip will be automatically connected to the inputs of the master strip. It is up to you to ensure that the IO configuration matches up. The rule "Input/mains" would mean "connect any main outputs in the Input group to my inputs", but you don't need to use groups in such a simple scenario... Note that the rules have an order of precedence (rightmost is highest).
