PUNE: A law student was arrested on charges of ragging a commerce
student of a city-based college on Tuesday. The police have identified
the suspect as Neeraj Dubey (20) of Shukrawar Peth.

Joint commissioner of police (law and order) Rajendra Sonawane said
Dubey is a second year law student. He had allegedly asked a man to
threaten the student on his cell phone by saying that he had received
blood money (supari) of Rs 5,000 for beating him.

Dubey had assured the student that he would settle the matter and
demanded Rs 2,000 from him. He started harassing and teasing the
student for not paying the amount since February 2009.

Sonawane said the minor student sought the help of a political activist
and called Dubey on FC road for collecting the amount. When Dubey
arrived, the activist and others caught him and handed him over to the
police.

The student has registered a complaint of extortion against Dubey at
the Deccan Gymkhana police station under the Indian Penal Code and
Maharashtra Ragging Act.
