AHMEDABAD: A fresher at the National Institute of Fashion Technology
(NIFT), Gandhinagar has alleged that she was ragged at the institute
recently. The student has complained against four of her seniors. The
matter was brought to the notice of the authorities of the institute
and was resolved without initiating further action.

The first year student on Monday complained to the director that she
was being harassed. "The first year student complained that she was
made to come to the college wearing a short dress, put on slippers and
keep her hair oiled. As soon as we received the complain, she was made
to identify the seniors. We then called the first year student along
with those whom she had complained against and the matter was sorted
out. There were no further action initiated," said Mitesh Vyas,
director of the institute.

"There was a group of boys who wanted to get friendly with her. They
kept trying for a few days, but she gave them a cold shoulder. The
issue become bigger when she called a few of her local friends, and the
two groups got into a tiff," said a student.

"We have kept ourselves prepared. Third year students have been made
mentors of first year students. There is an anti-ragging committee on
campus that keeps taking rounds in the hostels even during the night.
Students and their parents are made to sign an undertaking that their
ward will not get involved in any such activity," adds Vyas.

Recently, National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad had thrown out
a student after a fresher accused him of ragging. Even the Supreme
Court has come down heavily on ragging calling it a "human rights abuse
in essence". In February the court had directed all educational
institutions to take stringent anti-ragging measures, including filing
criminal cases against erring students.
