KANCHEEPURAM: The Kanchi Taluk Police on Wednesday arrested 19 students
of the Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Viswa Mahavidyalaya at Enathur
near here on charges of ragging. They have been remanded to judicial
custody.

According to Inspector of Police A. Panchatcharam, a second-year B.E.
student, Harsh Gupta, had lodged a complaint stating that his seniors
in the university — Abhikanth, Ritheshkumar, Deepak Kumar, Amithraj and
Kumar Mohith Pratap — came to his room on a rented premises near the
Old Railway Station on Monday night in an inebriated condition and
ragged him.

When he brought the incident to the notice of university authorities on
Tuesday, he was asked to submit a complaint.

Mr. Panchatcharam said on coming to know that Harsh had approached the
authorities, Abhikanth and 18 others went in search of him on Tuesday
night to his the room, but did not find him.

Later, on coming to know that he was staying with his friend, Rithesh
Anand, a third-year B.E. student, in a rented house near the
university, the group went there and picked a quarrel with Harsh,
Ritesh and his friends.

The group, armed with hockey sticks and cricket bats, inflicted
injuries on Ritesh, Harsh and seven others. Ritesh, who sustained
grievous injuries, was rushed to hospital at Porur. Others were treated
at private hospitals in Kancheepuram.
