Kolkata Four first-year students of the Jadavpur University were
allegedly ragged and mentally harassed on Friday night by their seniors
at the university’s main hostel, next to the Jadavpur police station.

The matter came to light after a written complaint was submitted by two
of the victims to the dean of students, Rajat Ray, on Sunday morning.

According to reports, three mechanical engineering students and one
civil engineering student were ragged by six second-year students,
three each from the two departments.

“I came to know about the incident today morning. On Monday a special
meeting of the anti-ragging committee of the university will be
convened,” said Siddharth Datta, the JU Pro Vice-Chancellor. “We will
decide on the issue considering the Raghavan Committee recommendations
and the Supreme Court guidelines,” Datta added.

The university authorities, however, said the actual number of the
victim and the miscreant students was not yet known and it is difficult
to comment on the issue before an inquiry.

The anti-ragging committee, comprising students and teachers, will
conduct a detailed inquiry in this incident.
