VIJAYAWADA: Two students of Siddartha Engineering College at Kanur near
here were arrested on Wednesday on charges of harassing and ragging a
girl student.

The harassed girl, who filed a complaint with the police, reportedly
attempted suicide four days ago. The cops are searching for two other
students who were named by the victim. The first-year B Tech student in
her complaint said four of her classmates have been harassing her for
the last few months.

The accused students — Yarlagadda Pavan and Manne Satish — were
arrested on Wednesday night and cases were registered against them
under the AP Prevention of Ragging Act of 1997.

"They made my life a living hell by constantly teasing me and trying to
physically abuse me," the girl said in her complaint. Police said the
girl took sleeping pills on March 7 night in her hostel room and fell
unconscious. The parents reportedly took her to a private hospital for
treatment and wanted to hush up the matter.

However, the girl mustered courage to lodge the complaint against the
accused students after her recovery. In fact, the state government had
brought out a new GO two days ago making the anti-ragging rules
stringent.

As per the GO, the management of the college would also be held
responsible in case a ragging complaint was filed from any junior
student.
