CHENNAI: Sinmoi Debroy (21), hailing from Guwahati, Assam, an engineering college student, hanged himself to death, following the alleged ragging by his seniors. According to the police, Debroy, a first-year student in a private engineering college at Sholinganallur, was staying in a hostel at Padhur in Kelambakkam, where students from other colleges also stayed. On Sunday, he went out for lunch and after returning to his room he locked the door. At night, a few of his batch mates knocked on his door to call him out for dinner but he did not respond. When they looked through the window, they were shocked to see him hanging from a fan. The Kelambakkam police recovered Sinmoi’s body and sent it to the Chengalpattu hospital for post-mortem. On checking Sinmoi’s mobile phone, they found that it contained 42 messages, most of them allegedly abusive and threatening in nature. Initial investigations revealed that he was threatened by his seniors who demanded money from him.
