I just started Notepad++ after updating to version 4.9. I first re-placed the
Compare Plug-In DLL dated 22-04-2008 instead of the 7-04-2008 version of the
installer.
Notepad++ had opened my last session as expected, but now in each document where
a selection was stored, the selection was used for highlighting throughout the
document automatically. I don't like this and I don't think Notepad++ should
(have).

I am wondering, this is the first time that I installed notepad++. Somehow I
cannot get my Function List to work (it says feature unsupported). I want a
php function list, does that mean that I have to find a function list out there
and set the file as .php?

Yes, that is the easiest answer.
But what if I _do_ want to use the feature, but just don't want anything to
be highlighted when Notepad++ is started again with a selection in a document
restored from a previous session?
Do you think it should be highlighted??

This is OP.
The spellchecker isn't even installed. It complained that Aspell wasn't
installed
when I tried to mess with it initially.
I then tried an install without plugins, and got exactly the same result.
Doesn't
seem like it should be the spell-checker.
