Greetings.
My immediate concern is -
I recently decided to try Notepad++.
I use the uninstalled zip download.
It seems to me if I download the new zip
I would have to overwrite the existing
unzipped download & therefore lose
all my customizations.
Could/Would someone advise how one
might start using new Notepad++
releases without losing all existing customizations?
Any insights appreciated.
Thank you.
Regards,
AEN

Currently dragging tabs between rows in a Multi-line Tab Bar is a bit of a hit
and miss. When you drag the active tab to a different row of the tab bar,
Notepad++
will rapidly switch between the rows to make the current active row on the
bottom.
This makes it very hard to drag tabs between rows. If this is unclear, just
create a whole lot of tabs in a window and try to drag a tab on the bottom row
to the top to see what i mean.
Would it be possible to change the way dragging tabs works by locking this
"place
active tab row on the bottom" feature until the user has released the mouse
button. So if i click a tab to drag it, Notepad++ will not switch the rows
so that the active tab is on the bottom row until i have released the mouse
button.
This is the only thing that is annoying me in this wonderful program.
Tony

You can see file path in the title of NPP if you switch to some tab you will
see that title text is changing.

hi,
i just figured out - again - that scrolling while having a selected text draged
is not possible.
i.e. in MS Explorer or MS word you can move the mouse to to top or bottom window
element to make it scroll while dragging an object.
this is very useful if you want to edit something without chaning the clipboard.
ps: is there a preffered way to post request? tracker or forum or both?
regards
McLoo

Suggestion: archive folder where you installed Notepad++, install new version.
Then, after trying new ver, delete folder with new ver and restore ones from
archive.
Suggestion: extract only exe and dll.

You're in it... :)
Unfortunately, although NPP is a great bit of software, these forums are largely
populated by sarcastic people posting anonymously. I have no idea which, if
any of them are developers, but certainly the impression given is that the NPP
devs are pretty intolerant of any requests for help, or suggestions for
improvements.
There is a tendency for any new post to be met with a cry of 'search the
forums',
and in my experience this is rarely an action that will yield an answer. What
you will get, as you have found, is a bunch of people _asking_ the same question
but no useful responses. A bunch of flames, perhaps. Some more 'search the
forums' responses. Or maybe just radio silence. Rarely an actual answer.
I really hope this is something that can be addressed constructively (though
I expect this post will simply trigger one of the standard sarcastic responses)
as these forums are currently one of the most unwelcoming 'support forums' I
have come across. There has been more than one post here recently that has
started with someone coming here with a genuine support question and basically
ended up with them being driven to use a different piece of software altogether
- purely down to the unfriendly nature of the responses.
As one of the front-doors of the software it really lets down what, as I have
already said, is a fantastic editor and a great tool.

mark you do have a point (thanks)! finally someone who understands the real
trouble behind feeling grateful for a free software project but suggesting new
features at the same time. I personally like n++ and it is very fit for all
needs, it's just that I feel few minor changes would dramatically improve my
user experience and I feel that the software author (donho) would like such
feedback and perhaps just missed the previous thread by working on something
useful, relaxing, living, ... and not having time to check the forums daily.
that's why I decided to start this thread anew, hoping to catch the eye of
someone
who cares.
donho thanks for this amazing piece of software and thanks for finding time
to check the forums

Subject: [Notepad-plus-plus] Firefox tabs + Pidgin tear away tabs
suggestion
To: [email protected]
Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Hi,
First, want to say, thanks for a great lightweight editor. It's really
flexible, lightweight, and is powerful without getting in the way. It's a
great piece of open source software.
Second, wanted to suggest a new feature. I saw that a recent version has added
the ability to turn off tabs and open instances like Notepad. Tabs are great
because these days, everyone opens a gazillion windows and so the original
taskbar doesn't do so good a job of keeping things organized for you anymore.
It provides something like a shallow hierarchy so that your open windows remain
easy to find.
But with instances it's much easier to set up two windows side by side for
comparison (i.e. code on one side, class being used on the other), which I can
move from monitor to monitor with ease (Ultramon keyboard shortcuts!). This is
more convenient and faster than using a split window which requires a lot of
clicking and dragging to get to that point. It is also in general ultrafast to
move windows around into an order that fits my work needs at the moment (and
that order changes a lot as I complete tasks or needs change). Tabs, I can't
do that easily with unfortunately.
The solution? Use a Firefox heterogenous model where you can mix instances and
tabs. You can open files in new instances (~"open link in new window) or a new
tab in the current instance (~"open link in new tab"). Open files could also
be dragged from one open instance to another. Taking the example of Pidgin,
open tabs could simply be "pulled out" or "torn out" of the current instance
and if not dropped in the tab-bar area of a Notepad++ instance, would create a
new Notepad++ instance with the tab as the only open tab. I believe "tear-away
tabs" was supposed to be a feature in Firefox 3, but it looks like it didn't
make it.
One more thing to note (unrelated). When you have split views, the
double-clicking the dividing bar I believe usually results in a 50% split for
each view in other programs. Might be something to consider too.
Anyways, thank you Don and other devs for a great program, and hope that you
might consider my suggestions for making Notepad++ even better when multiple
monitors are being used.
Best,
James
