i've checked the stylers.xml,and it seems very ok.
it works fine after my configuring the style configurator.

Is is possible to use map CTRL-X to cut line when no text is selected a la 
Visual
Studio?  I find CTRL-X much easier since it is close to CTRL-C,V and Z.

I searched the archives and docs but couldn't find a way to do this.

I still think that your stylers.xml is not updated.

See how it should look like: 
 http://www.mediafire.com/file/zt3mmnjy24z/search_result.PNG 

Make sure you update the right stylers.xml - usually in the user data folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Application Data\Notepad++\stylers.xml

thx for the suggestion. u where right, it's because I just exchanged the 
executable.
I did a clean install and vouila, no ugly-search anymore!
and imagine that: the collapse-buttons are present :)

????????(automatically detects the file status): 
all three boxed in thie field are checked in default. when i only check the
first, close the dialogue, close n++ window, then reopen n++, there are still
all three box checked.

I have a list of files and directories, that i want to compare against
a separate list of files and directories.  Is there a way in notepad++
to show diff's?

Like:

list A:             list B:
001.txt             001.txt
002.txt             002.txt
003.txt             004.txt
004.txt             005.txt
005.txt             006.txt
007.txt             007.txt

Is there a way to produce results that would return 003.txt from list
A and 006.txt from list B?

It makes no sense to me to make a no used margin available for users.
