Don,
Here's my thoughts on rationalising the NP++ menus. It's a draft proposal which
aims to increase the efficiency of the menus and efficacy by:
(a) reducing the number of menus (and therefore choice when looking for
something)
(b) reducing the number of items on menus particularly Edit, the longest (and
therefore assisting those using lower resolution screens and reducing choice
when looking for something)
(c) clustering similar functions (so there are fewer places to look for
something)
As I said, it's an early draft. As a consequence it may have typos and
omissions.
(The red underling is Word's spell checker.) It's a big change but some parts
could be adopted and applied in small chunks as you see fit. It contains all
the current functionality although you might not recognize it at first because
I've changed some of the command names and concepts. For example, 'Syntax
Format'
replaces 'User Defined Languages' and 'Languages'. I've mostly brough similar
things together but in a few cases, Run and Macros, I've split the functionality
up.
There's a few areas where I don't know as much as I should. I've taken a punt
with these. They are 'Run' which I've changed 'Commands' and ...
At the last minute I realised I've mis-used the ellipses mark (..) on menus.
I decided to get this out rather than delay publication any longer. I'll add
proper cascading menu marks, tick-marks for alternatives, and ticks for 'On'
status if there are requests for a further iteration of this proposal.
I've also put myself in the firing line of plugin developers for daring to
suggest
uniform naming conventions in the Plugin menu, although this need not affect
their program names.

Hi, Ive been using the preceding version for a few weeks and was very happy
with it.
So of course I updated to the latest version [5.3.1] as soon as it became
available.
However, I found that one of the features I use most frequently, the "find in
files" dialog has been compromised by the update.
PRE-531-behaviour:
1. Open a file c:\example\whatever.txt in n++
2. Open the "find in files" dialog (ctrl+shift+f)
3. The "directory" box was automatically set to "C:\example\".
POST-531-behaviour:
1. - same -
2. - same -
3. The directory box is not following the file I selected anymore. Instead it
remembers the last directory I used the "find in files" function in.

I should probably add, that I did turn on "follow the current document" in
settings
... I also tried setting it to any of the other 2 options, the entire setting
doesnt have an effect anymore ..

You are of course, entitled to your opinion. Personally, I think it does a
very good (not perfect) job, especially for the money I paid for it. I see
no particular reason to flame at you (even though you specifically ask for it.)
If you regularly have trouble utilizing a particular feature of the editor,
why do you continue using that feature? Obviously, there is a problem. Instead
of just tossing inflammatory comments, you could request assistance in tracking
down the problem. You know, it could very well be a COMBINATION of problems,
not all of which are attributable to N++.
For example: You state it crashes on you every 4-5 hours. I regularly leave
it running ALL WEEK with a dozen files open, editing 8+ hours/day. I have not
had it crash yet even once. Could there perhaps be a difference between your
system and mine? Bet there is or I'd be in the same place you are - looking
for a new editor.
You're having trouble with FTP - I don't use that feature myself, but such
things
as you describe are often the result of misconfiguration of firewall settings
and server options. The fault of the plugin code may simply be in not handling
the problems caused by something else gracefully. I find it difficult to
believe
it is as fault-ridden as you claim for everybody. The question then becomes
"What is different about your setup that is exercising a little-used portion
of the code?"
Since you're obviously frustrated beyond rational thought with N++, go look
up an editor called SourceEdit. It's freeware and "mostly stable". It *has*
been known to crash occasionally on my system when drag-n-drop operations are
performed, YMMV - nobody else on their forum has the problem. It has integrated
FTP - and I *did* use the feature for a while when I utilized the editor and
never had a problem with it.
I switched to N++ very simply because SourceEdit is not portable. N++ is.
(If you select the correct install option.) I had a new need to work on "other
peoples machines" and a thumb-drive with familiar tools was my weapon of choice.
SourceEdit no longer met all my requirements. N++ did.
There are still more free editors out there. I'm sure you can do your own
research
to find what you need. Or, you can stick with N++ and help the developers make
it better by reporting your issues and helping them figure WTF.

Hi DV!
Thanks for the thread. It's the same problem. but I coun't figure out the
solution
still.
Note that all I need is to somehow sending the Terminate command in the "NppExec
- Warning - Console process is still running" dbox in my running script
or CTRL-C
So the question would be is there any command or shourtcut to Terminate button
or CTRL-C? Something link "Npp_termin" would be perfect!

I'm terribly sorry for the way I wrote my question earlier, I just reviewed
it and realized it's not very helpful..
So what I really what do to is keep the default icons that come with Windows
Notepad (.txt, .ini and .nfo) but without having to go through Explorer -> Tools
-> Folder Options every time I format (which is relatively often). Notepad++
icons are, unfortunately, all the same
So what I want to know is if there is a file somewhere in Notepad++'s configs
where I can write the path for these icons so that whenever I format I just
have to backup all my notepad++'s settings and it'll keep those icon
associations.
Hope that's clearer.

I'm using notepad++ for one of less popular language - Progress4gl. I wrote
my own APIs/4gl.xml file, but Progress is so specific language - some functions
have sign "minus" (-) in middle of function name, for eg. CAN-DO(), CAN-FIND(),
USE-INDEX, NO-WAIT, RETURN-VALUE and many others functions, and notepad does'nt
display any hint for this functions. What can I do now? with regards. k.

Is there some clever way to make the keyboard shortcut act as a toggle,
something
like binding it to another macro with wParam="0" from inside the first macro
and vice versa? Would be nice to have, but of course not necessary.
