I will admit that I was distracted trying to help the kids with their homework 
at the same time. I will give it another look tomorrow. You might be right, I 
should hold the read lock while checking to see if cl is equal to null. The 
sychronized methods will block each other. The locks allow concurrent readers, 
but the write lock blocks all reads.
