very least, non-zero for error should be a guaranteed outcome. I think this 
would also be helpful for some of the Apache Slider work (helpful in 
determining what to do downstream).

indeed. :) I ran into this with an ops problem that at first appeared to be "my 
watchdog isn't working!"
