A held list can also arrive without them: after an indexed write, other.merge([app: [rows: config.app.rows]]) passes the held list as the only entry of a plain map, so it was skipped and other.navigate('app', 'rows') was null. The held list is now skipped only when the map holds an indexed entry beside it for each of its elements; otherwise it is merged as a list, as any other list is.
