The java compiler does accept this implementation:
{code:java}
public class ParentJava {
public ParentJava parentMethod() {
return null;
}
}
public class ChildJava extends ParentJava {
public ChildJava parentMethod() {
return null;
}
}
{code}
The trait was being used for a way to copy the method behavior to the class.
From the last comment on the java ticket: "javac supports covariant return
types". That's the situation we're wanting to implement with trait generics
but GROOVY-5106 breaks. The generated code is still valid java since they have
covariant return types.
