   Deployment Context & Motivation
Currently, Apache James provides two main architectural paths for
non-distributed or single-instance deployments, both of which leave a
significant gap for small-to-medium businesses (SMBs) and edge use cases:
   1. The Postgres App (postgres-app): This is the flagship, highly active, and
modern enterprise distribution. However, it introduces significant operational
complexity for smaller teams. Running a dedicated PostgreSQL instance (plus
PgBouncer, WAL management, connection pooling, and routine VACUUM maintenance)
creates heavy infrastructure and DBA overhead that is often unjustified for
standalone, compact, or lightweight environments.
   2. The JPA App (jpa-app): Historically intended for lightweight setups, this
distribution relies on legacy object-relational mapping (OpenJPA/Hibernate). It
is currently near-deprecated, barely maintained, and suffers from massive
architectural penalties (heavy reflection, dirty checking, random 4K database
block overwrites) under modern concurrent email workloads.
   The Solution: xodus-app
The proposed Xodus-powered embedded architecture directly bridges this gap.
It replaces the unmaintained jpa-app with a production-ready, ultra-fast,
Zero-DBA alternative that matches the performance needs of modern applications
while keeping the entire deployment inside a single JVM process (java -jar).
